A New York Deco Bar in Montparnasse

Travelers looking for the modern day version of a Salon will find it at the Swan Bar in Paris, in the heart of mythical Montparnasse. Upon entering the Swan, you are transported into a chic Manhattan bar of the 30’s where the atmosphere suggests images of Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Hemingway or Gertrude Stein.

An international crowd, with good conversation, fine music, and great cocktails await you in this Art Deco haven where proprietor and ex-pat Lionel Bloom greets denizens as if they were guests in his living room, and where on any given night you can hear jazz greats like Dave Liebman or Jimmy Cobb, or the blues of Folies Bergeres star Manda Djin, the soulful piano of singer songwriter John Simon, or vocal jamming by a variety of artists known and unknown.

While sipping elegant cocktails at the bar you may meet “the Joker” jazz pianist from the south of France, elegant African diplomats, slim American and Scandinavian models, or wide-eyed jazz lovers from everywhere, served by Fiona, the talented and charming barmaid.

The Swan’s space is divided into several areas which encourages clients to move about freely. You enter through an enclosed terrace with its mini-blinds and green glass Deco-etched door on the Boulevard du Montparnasse. Behind a long mahogany bar there is a superb 1906 stained glass panel signed Felix Gaudin depicting two elegant swans on a multicolored lake. Three steps up to another level welcomes aficionados around the piano and the musicians of the evening. At the end of the bar is a wide, sweeping, dark, hardwood staircase with wrought iron Deco grill work which leads down to a second salon; where there is often an exposition of paintings by different artists.

The Swan Bar combines the traditions of the “bar américain” and the Parisian salon. The Swan is all about the pleasures of the night; cocktails and music – especially jazz, chance meetings and stimulating conversation.

The Swan Bar is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. "apero" concerts or piano bar from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Concerts from 9:30 p.m. – 12 midnight (see program), and often improvised jams from midnight to closing.
